I'm sorry if I sound like a broken disc but this line will haunt me till the end of my days because I'm unfortunately a Gale girlie and you'd think that "Hey if you eat this tadpole then your boyfriend doesn't have to kill himself" would be a VERY OBVIOUS thing for him to say to manipulate you and he just. never does. Like I know Act 3 is very rushed and Gale's arc is also rushed but like, bestie, you did manage to keep his character arc somewhat consistent regarding his sacrificial/suicidal tendencies to the point that you have to keep talking Gale down from blowing himself up until the last moment. The sense of foreboding is very present and very real. But the Emperor just... never thinks to use Gale as motivation? He'll throw his favourite soup at you and take his shirt off and tell you you are the specialest thrall of all and the tadpole will make you super beautiful and powerful but he'll never go "Maybe if you are super powerful your boyfriend won't have to kill himself"?

Like I know there (kind of is) a theme in Act 3 where the Emperor is clearly trying to separate you from the group as he wants you exclusively under his own influence, but if he is at the stage where he is trying everything, from being nice and sympathetic to outright threats and whatnot, you would think he would start using your love for others against you. But no. To be clear, Emperor is not the only one to make very baffling manipulative decisions (Orin you had all the time in the world to plan your very super special kidnapping and you picked the companion I care less about?! You got an army of shapeshifters and you couldn't figure out a plan to kidnap my love interest?!) but all this needed was like, three lines of dialogue. But instead he never does something that would be very obvious for him to do and then he says shit like this.

makes me a little sad when star trek ignores IDIC. like. vulcans are logical. that is true. But 'logical', for vulcans, does not amount to 'without compassion,' and it definitely doesn't amount to 'racial superiority.' Belief in 'infinite diversity in infinite combinations' should NOT result in the weird racist/speciest stuff we're getting in some of the newer treks. It does make sense that some vulcans are discriminatory. They're still flawed. But that should not be common or expected, like it seems to be in SNW. If it is, then it's a race of hypocrites, which. doesn't seem very true to Star Trek's message.

I think TOS Spock does a pretty good job of embodying this. Not always, it was the 60s, after all, but mostly. He was often trying to find non-violent routes, and get by without killing - even if they were in danger or had already been attacked. (See: the mugato, and the horta (until Kirk was the one in danger, lmao. t'hy'la > IDIC), the Gorn ship). Kirk, in his eulogy, calls him the most human soul he's ever known, and I've always read that as Kirk calling out Spock's overwhelming compassion.

It's just so much more interesting when Vulcans get to be radically compassionate. I want them to believe that everything and everyone has value. I want them to respect all ways of being. I want them to find ways for even very non-humanoid aliens to exist unfettered in society. I want them to see hybrids and think that it's amazing. Also, like, disability rep. I want Vulcans to have The Most Accessible Planet and available resources because they want everyone to feel accepted and valued. It makes for better characters and more interesting stories.

so stede steps up as a captain, kills the man who harmed his crew, and suddenly, for once in stede's life, he isn't a joke! the gentleman pirate is taken seriously and welcomed into the pirate community!

and what happens less than 24 hours later? ed calls their night together a mistake, AND LEAVES.

yes, obviously the situation is more nuanced, and these old men are once again struggling to communicate, but i 100% understand why stede went a bit of the rails at the end of episode 7. stede's been so focused on trying to help ed, that he's completely ignored his own ongoing identity crisis and trauma, and after the incident at the academy in series 1, this meltdown was long overdue.

So here is my take, for my main blog, letting the fandom wackiness escape containment:

These are both top-class contenders for the patricide awards. I wouldn't grudge Raven the win. But think of it this way:

Raven has daddy issues on a vast comicsverse scale. It's very impressive. Her father is a demon, destroyer of worlds.

Jin Guangyao has daddy issues on a distressingly human scale. His father is...a shitty rich powerful guy who treats women and children as disposable objects. And then, yes, that attitude festers into JGY's eventual murder of him, where he enacts the same kind of violence. It's grotesque, it slips out of the realm of realism to lurid horror. Content warnings galore!

But at the heart of it, Jin Guanyao kills his father for being a real-world monster. The boss who sexually exploits his workers and all the women who come into his reach; all the other rich powerful people know it and they think it's icky (but kind of funny) and they're certainly not going to DO anything about it except gossip a little while they drink they guy's wine and eat his food off the fanciest plates money can buy.

Vote Jin Guangyao for the real world. Not because he's a messed-up little blorbo (which he is) and not because he's a sympathetic (to me!) villain despite participating in the cycle of violence and exploitation.

Because his dad is the kind of banal piece of shit that shows up on the front page of the news with years of cover-ups behind him.

I wish the Princess Zeldas all got numbers or something. (Ex. Princess Zelda the 1038th) Especially in BotW where multiple Zeldas (Zelda, her mom and her grandmother) can all be referenced in the same scene.

I have gotten myself all turned around so many times by trying to refer to both Princess Zelda and Mom Zelda in the same context.
